500 Wines Easily

For this week’s post we’re going to do a quick little exercise in arithmetic and see where it lands us.

Let’s say that you swing-by the store for every single one of our Friday and Saturday tastings. If you did this, we can safely assume that you’d be privy to the concept of the secret sipper and so, at minimum, you’d try thirteen new wines a week. Granted, we do repeat a wine from time to time but for the sake of argument, allow me to exclude that factor for a moment. Thirteen distinct wines mulitplied by fifty-two weeks produces 676, a formidable number of distinct wines tasted per annum but it doesn’t stop there. We also do an annual or semi-annual grand tastings in the basement, each of which typically offer an additional forty to fifty wines. If you attend both of these events and taste through every wine, your total number of wines would balloon to well past 750 and remember, you’d taste every single one of these wines for free, zilch, nada, at no expense to you. Mind you, this total doesn’t even take into account the wine you consume outside of our shop.

Now ask yourself, how difficult is it to realistically arrive at tasting 500 distinct wines in one calander year. If you live in the area, I think we could agree that you could arrive at that number with very little effort. Perhaps more thought provoking is the question as to whether or not there is any other food or beverage that conveniently offers this range of diversity? Personally, I can’t think of anything in my life that even gets remotely close to that number- not even burritos get close. And remember, you get to sample all these wines for free.

For the next couple of weeks, I’d like to talk about this theme and how you can take full advantage of the opportunity.  500 different wines are one heck of a number and with a couple of little suggestions, maybe we can help you get the most out of this program.

Thanks for reading and we hope to see you around the shop soon,

D. Hultgren
